VRE’s Guide to the Perfect Summer
Summer’s in full swing—and with longer days stretching ahead, it’s the perfect time to soak it all in. Whether you’re commuting to work, planning a city day trip, or saying yes to a spontaneous post-work adventure, VRE is here to help you make the most of the season—minus the stress of traffic.
Before we dive into all the summer possibilities, here’s your quick VRE commuting 101: Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle, dress in layers to handle that onboard A/C, and don’t forget a portable charger (and maybe an umbrella—just in case). Now that you're ready, here’s a glimpse of what your summer could look like with VRE.
Summer Fridays, But Make It Better
With Summer Fridays in full swing, it’s the perfect excuse to squeeze in some fun before heading home. If you're a hybrid worker, consider getting into the city early—knock out some work from a coffee shop, then give yourself a little time to explore before catching the train.
Here are a few quick escapes and low-effort adventures you can fit in before your commute:
- Take a stroll through the U.S. Botanic Garden — just a 12-minute walk from VRE’s L’Enfant Station. It’s calm, colorful, and free.
- Get inspired at the Hirshhorn Museum — only 7 minutes from L’Enfant and packed with modern art, sculpture, and multimedia art.
- Tap into your inner kid at the National Air and Space Museum — because space is still cool, and its basically next door.
Small breaks > no breaks. Make your Summer Friday count!
A Long Weekend in Fredericksburg
Do you need a change of scenery? Taking a weekend trip to Downtown Fredericksburg makes the perfect weekend escape. You can catch the 315 train on Friday from Union Station, L’Enfant, Crystal City, or Alexandria and roll into Fredericksburg just in time for dinner. The historic downtown area is walkable and full of boutique shops, local art galleries, and good food. Head back into the city early Monday morning feeling refreshed and ready to take on the week ahead.
Manassas Ice Cream Break
Simple, yet satisfying at any time during the summer heat. Get off at Manassas Station and take a short walk (about a mile) to Nathan’s Dairy Bar. It’s a local favorite for a reason—creamy soft serve, classic flavors, and just the right kind of summer treat. If you want a drink for the stroll, stop by Jirani Coffeehouse right in Old Town Manassas. It’s a nice combo: iced coffee in one hand, soft serve in the other.
Cats, Coffee, and Waterfront Views
If you’re in the Alexandria area, make a stop at Mount Purrnon, a cat café where you can sip wine or coffee and hang out with rescue cats—many of whom are adoptable. You might come for the drinks, but don’t say we didn’t warn you come home with a new fur baby... While you’re there, check out Old Town Books to grab your next summer read, and take a walk by the waterfront before heading home.
Summer doesn’t have to mean road trips and packed schedules. Whether you’re planning ahead or keeping things spontaneous, VRE can help you stretch out your summer days and turn every ride into something meaningful. Drop your favorite summer activity down below!
