A Beginners Guide to Onboard Safety

DMV Commuters Deserve Safe Transit

The safety of our passengers is always our top priority. Through initiatives like Rail Safety Week, VRE works to keep riders aware of track safety — reminders like only crossing tracks at public crossings with a crossbuck and never going around lowered gates. The onboard safety of our passengers is of equal importance and with safety at the forefront of public conversation, VRE wants to reassure riders on the safety measures already in place that keep our passengers secure.

Law Enforcement Officers

VRE allows all uniformed law enforment officers to ride for free! VRE’s Undercover Law Enforcement Officers program places trained, credentialed law enforcement professionals — many of them frequent riders — on our trains as well. These officers have the authority to respond and assist crews immediately should a serious incident occur on board. While crime on VRE is extremely rare, this program provides an added layer of protection and peace of mind.

Small but Powerful Safety Tools

Each VRE railcar is equipped with a passenger intercom unit that connects directly to the train crew — a small but powerful tool when every second counts. First aid kits are also available in every car. Outside the trains, blue Emergency Notification System (ENS) signs are posted at all vehicular crossings, displaying a location ID and phone number that connect you directly to railroad dispatchers in an emergency.

Specialized Train Sessions

Throughout the year, VRE conducts various specialized training sessions to boost rail safety and emergency preparedness. This past August, VRE hosted the U.S. Capitol Polic K9 Unit to enhance the unti’s familiarty with our rail cares and ensure that in the event of an emergency on or near our system, emeegency responders are well prepared.

Knowledge Over Fear

Commuters across the nation deserve to feel safe on public transportation. Whether you’re heading to work, school, or visiting family, we want you to feel confident knowing the resources and safeguards in place not just outside on the tracks but onboard our cars as well. If you have any safety questions that aren’t addressed here, please leave a comment below — we’re here to help.
