Manassas Park—You’re Award Winning!
This February, the parking expansion at VRE’s Manassas Park Station was honored with a Grand Award at the 2026 Virginia Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA), hosted by ACEC Virginia! The Engineering Excellence Awards recognize projects worldwide that demonstrate innovation, creative problem-solving, and engineering’s unique ability to improve our world. This is a national competition that VRE was proud to represent alongside our partners at Manhattan Construction Company, VHB, and Gannett Fleming.
You may recall receiving a project update on the Manassas park expansion last May, where we shared exclusive photos: overnight construction in action, pedestrian bridge beams being lifted into place, and elevator installations taking shape. What those snapshots didn’t fully show was 85,000+ work hours behind the scenes, completed with zero OSHA incidents. The result was grand, a project completed and ready for Manassas Park riders four months ahead of schedule and $1 million under budget.
Riders, you’ve experienced the differences firsthand, so we don’t need to go over the 740 new parking spaces for commuters and the city, or the safe and modernized pedestrian bridge that connects directly to the station. So, while the new garage is something you can see and use every day, we can also mention some of its most significant impacts that are less visible. With more access to rail, this project is estimated to curb 1,500 metric tons of CO2 annually by encouraging rail travel over car! And we can once again thank all our partners at Manhattan Construction Company, VHB, and Gannett Fleming for helping us execute a GRAND project.
VRE’s proud to invest in interconnectivity and the future of our region! Awards are great, and so is thoughtful planning and a commitment to doing this work safely.
